Appropriately enough, it truly was a wire used as a guide. But the origin was from the French and Dutch, and their term for the tension wire they used to secure their structures.
The key features to recognise when selecting a guidewire are: (1) tapered tip or not; (2) polymer cover or not; (3) stiffness; and (4) trackability. It is not uncommon to exchange one set of wires for another during a complex procedure, which is done usually through a microcatheter.

Guide wires are constructed with a central shaft of stainless steel or nitinol. The shaft tapers to a distal flexible tip spring coil made of platinum or tungsten (see Figure 3). Nitinol core wires are more resistant to kinking than stainless steel core wires but typically have less torque response.
Coronary guide wires are specialized pieces of equipment used to deliver therapies to diseased areas of the coronary arterial system – the vascular pathways responsible for providing the heart muscle with oxygenated blood.
Solid Core Wire: The central wire is encased by a metal ‘spring’ coil. Mandrel Wire: The outer spring coil is at one end. Ribbon Wire: The spring coil encases both the core wire and a ribbon wire.
The guidewire is the device used to guide the catheter into place during CVC insertions. The purpose of a guidewire is to gain access to the blood vessels using a minimally invasive technique.

AVANTI®+ INTRODUCER SHEATH
Product Description
Sheath introducers (Cordis) central lines are large-bore catheters (6-8.5 Fr) commonly placed in the ED for rapid infusion of large volumes of crystalloid or colloid, insertion of transvenous pacemakers, and administration of medications that needing reliable central access.
For use in arterial and venous procedures requiring percutaneous introduction of Intravascular devices.
The Cordis AVANTI+ Introducer is the pioneer of catheter sheath introducer technology. Featuring a SLIX Valve, the AVANTI+ Introducer provides smooth transitions, monitoring capabilities and exceptional performance for your procedural success, as well as:
- A hexacuspid design that provides a balance between catheter maneuverability and hemostasis.
- A rotating suture collar that facilitates greater procedural flexibility. It stays in place better and allows more patient movement.
- A kink-resistant cannula design integrating a soft, flexible inner layer with a stiffer outer layer for improved bendability and support. It is also less prone to kinking, cost-effective and reliable.
- Atraumatic tip transitions for both the sheath and the vessel dilator are uniquely tapered and manicured. This results in smooth insertions and may help lessen damage upon entry.
What size is a Cordis? A Cordis/AVANTI comes in many sizes. For the sake of rapid infusion, the sizes go from 8-11 french. There are two lengths of the large-bore cannula: 11cm and 23cm.
Introducer sheaths are used when there is the need for a larger catheter, such as for rapid volume administration or for the insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter.
The Correct Way to Pull a Sheath
- Take your index, middle and sometimes your ring finger, and place them slightly above the sheath to feel the patient’s pulse.
- Slowly remove the sheath in a sterile manner, holding occlusive pressure to avoid bleeding.
Our product range includes a wide range of Avanti transradial kit, cordis vista brite tip guiding catheters, emerald guidewire 150cm, guiding catheter 5f xb 3.5lbt, femoral sheath and empira ptca balloons cordis.
We are one of the leading Trader, Importer and Exporter of this highly commendable and diverse range of Aspiration Catheter, Transseptal Needle, Control Coronary Syringes, Introducer Sets etc.
